An ancient Shiva temple from the Mahabharata period
Bhayharan Nath Dham is a renowned site located approximately 30 kilometers south of Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh and about 36 kilometers north of Prayagraj. Situated in the village of Pure Vaishnav, within the Katra Gulab Singh Nagar Panchayat, the Dham covers around 10 acres. It houses the main temple as well as additional temples dedicated to Hanuman, Shiva-Parvati, Santoshi Maa, Radha-Krishna, and others. Set by the scenic Bakulahi River, the Dham is a vibrant spiritual center and a hub of faith for millions.
Tradition holds that during their 12-year exile following a dice game defeat, the Pandavas defeated the demon Bakasura at this site and established a Shivalinga here. This act, intended to restore their self-confidence, led to the deity being named “Bhayharan Nath,” symbolizing the remover of fear.
The surrounding area includes several ancient sites from the Mahabharata era, such as the mound at Unchdih village, statues from its excavation, the Surya Mandir in Swaruppur, and the Kamakhya Devi Temple in Kamasin, each linked with local legends and beliefs.
